Feb 07, 2007:
Bulgaria set for 8m tourists per year
Bulgaria has set itself a target of attracting eight million tourists this year, double the level of 2006 and enough to offer a substantial boost to the Bulgarian property market, according to reports.
More than €2 billion was generated in the past year from the four million people who visited Bulgaria, meaning that the sector accounted for 14 per cent of the country''s GDP. It also creates more than 140,000 jobs.
Experts from Bulgaria''s finance ministry and the ministry of economy and energy attended a tourism conference and outlined the challenges that the country faces in coming years.
They advised how structural funds from the EU could be used to develop the nation''s tourism market and support the Bulgarian property sector, the Sofia News Agency reports.
Areas expected to benefit from a development and investment programme in coming years include municipalities that will invest in the restoration and preservation of tourism sites.
Other schemes were also outlined, in relation to issues such as the environment, competitiveness, human resources and transport within the tourist market.
